Week 21 Recap

Tuesday, September 8 · UNM North

Kevin Nicholson knocks out the #2 seed

The bracket is down to eight. Tuesday night delivered on almost every front — an all-time upset, a nearly perfect scorecard, and a nervy split-net finish that went right down to the wire. The play-in round was bypassed, Kevin Nicholson and Sean Winters stepped directly into the field as seeds 16 and 15, and then the chaos began immediately.

Kevin Nicholson knocks out the #2 seed

Coming in as the 16th seed, Kevin shot 41 gross and a net 32 to beat Todd Sewell — the #2 seed — 7 points to 3. Todd answered with a net 38, but it wasn't close enough. Sewell drops to the consolation bracket. The top seeds aren't guaranteed anything in this format, and Kevin just proved it.

Andy Dean goes 36 gross — one over par

On a par-35 course, Andy fired a 36 gross and a net 34 to dismantle Dennis Candelaria 7.5 to 2.5. That's the kind of round that makes a bracket run feel real. Andy also picked up the low net prize. He's now the most dangerous player left.

Rael edges Harvey in an exact net tie

Paul Rael and Brit Harvey both shot 47 gross and netted identically at 38 — each with a 9 handicap. The match came down to hole-by-hole points: Rael 5, Harvey 4. Low net was split 0.5 apiece. Paul survives 5.5 to 4.5. Couldn't have been tighter.

Rains outruns Maxwell on handicap

Jimmie Rains shot 51 gross — the highest card of the night — but his 14 handicap brought him to a net 37, edging Jason Maxwell's net 39. Jimmie wins 6.5 to 3.5. A reminder that handicap golf is its own game entirely.

Pehr and Hunt shoot identical 42s

Tom Pehr (hcp 5, net 37) and Jeff Hunt (hcp 3, net 39) both carded 42 gross, but Tom's extra strokes made the difference. Pehr wins 5.5–4.5 on match points and low net. Hunt heads to the consolation side.

Kardas and Jaramillo advance on forfeit

Jeff Kardas was scheduled to face Joe Olson, and Thomas Jaramillo drew Brian Shields — but neither opponent showed. Kardas and Jaramillo move on without picking up a club. Olson and Shields drop to the consolation bracket.

Kevin Nicholson wins CTP on H2, then goes out and beats the #2 seed. One of the best individual nights in league history.
