Week 23 Recap

Tuesday, September 22 · UNM North

Dean solves the handicap puzzle — 7.5 points, no drama

Two matches, two decisive outcomes. The Cinderella stories met their end — Dean stopped the handicap math, Rael ended Nicholson's magical run — and NHGL's first championship final was set. Andy Dean and Paul Rael were all that stood between each other and the title, with the league's first-ever trophy on the line.

Finals Night — Sep 29, 2026

Championship (Dean vs. Rael), 3rd Place (Nicholson vs. Jaramillo), and 9th Place (Candelaria vs. Sewell) were all played Tuesday night. Paul Rael won the title 6–4.

SF 1 — Andy Dean (#8) def. T. Jaramillo (#5)

Going in, the math looked daunting for Dean. Jaramillo carried a hcp 11 advantage — nine strokes against Dean's hcp 2. Jaramillo came in off a first-round bye and a gritty 5.5–4.5 QF win over Pehr, and those nine extra net strokes are the kind of edge that changes outcomes in match play. But Dean never let the handicap become a factor. He posted a net 40 (42 gross) while Jaramillo posted a net 46. That's a six-stroke net gap that no handicap edge can paper over. Dean took hole after hole and cruised to a 7.5–2.5 win, the most lopsided result of the semifinals. Jaramillo's title run ends here; he drew Nicholson for 3rd place.

Dean's match points across the playoff: 7.5 (R1) → 6.0 (QF) → 7.5 (SF). He has been surgically consistent all postseason, and he now enters the Championship as the bracket's hottest player.

SF 2 — Paul Rael (#6) def. Kevin Nicholson (#16)

This was the matchup everyone circled after the QFs — two hcp 9 players, no strokes given, pure match play. Nicholson had posted net 32 in R1 and net 34 in the QF. The question was whether he could do it a third time. He nearly did. Net 39 is not a bad round; in any other matchup it might have been enough. But Rael — who has quietly been one of the most consistent players in this bracket — answered with a net 37. Two strokes better, 6–4, and the Nicholson story is over. Two wins from a league championship, the 16-seed's magical run ends in the semis. He drew Jaramillo for 3rd place.

Kevin Nicholson's playoff line: R1 net 32 · QF net 34 · SF net 39. Three consecutive elite rounds from the #16 seed who almost didn't make the field. The run ends in the semis, but it was something to watch.

Dean solves the handicap puzzle — 7.5 points, no drama

Nine extra net strokes for Jaramillo and it didn't matter. Dean's net 40 was clean, efficient, and more than enough. The #8 seed has now beaten the #9, #1 and #5 seeds and is one win from the title. This isn't an upset anymore — he entered Finals Night as the favorite.

Rael net 37 ends the Nicholson run

Rael has posted net 38 (R1), net 36 (QF), net 37 (SF) — three consecutive rounds within two strokes of each other. He doesn't flash the jaw-dropping numbers Nicholson posted, but he shows up every single week. That consistency wins championships.

No top-4 seed in sight — the Final is #8 vs. #6

The Championship Final is #8 vs. #6. The 3rd Place match is #16 vs. #5. Every player left standing was seeded fifth or lower, so NHGL's inaugural champion will come from outside the top four.

Nicholson's three-round arc: the best stretch in league history

Net 32, 34, 39 — three rounds all better than his seasonal average, starting from the play-in. He knocked out the #2 and #7 seeds along the way. Whatever happened in the 3rd Place match, Nicholson already wrote the best individual playoff story of this season.
